Abstract

Community relations processes are cardinal to the success of oil companies' operations. It must be carefully and collectively selected to ensure successful engagement and dialogue with host communities. Using questionnaire and in -depth interviews, the stud y revealed that Shell Company’s failure to select appropriate community relations strategies lead to the hostile relationship with the Ogoni people who felt exploited believing that the company could not do enough to leverage them from extreme poverty, eco nomic hardship and environmental pollution occasioned by their activities. The study suggests appropriate community relations strategies that can be used to address needs of the host communities.
